Norma Jean began playing together in 1981. The drummer first found his love of music by listening to his aunt's collection of records. The lead singer was influenced by his dad's love of music. Norma Jean started performing at the college bar Bandit. The blues heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Norma Jean were happy to get the record deal, but were not sure how far they would go. The release of their first release convinced them that they were right where they should be after their songs began to get lots of radio play. The band played for little to no money at first and was just happy to be given a chance to be heard.
Norma Jean knew that they were truly working musicians as soon as Dorothy Lordi started the first fan club for the group in 1979. Initially the band only had a few fans from Cincinnati in the club, but after playing from coast to coast the fan club’s membership exploded to a few thousand.
The most current album is 's first release since the band broke up eight years ago. The band may have just completed their latest album, but they are plotting their next move already.
Jacksonville has always been receptive to the band, even when they were small time, so the group schedules a show there every year, even if they are not touring.
