Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails Background

Nine Inch Nails began in the mind of Trent Reznor in 1987. Reznor had been the keyboardist in a Cleveland band, the Exotic Birds, but left to pursue his own music vision. With the permission of his boss at Right Track Studios, Reznor used the studio for free to create his own vision. Reznor played all the instruments except for the drums and he sent out the demos to several record companies. >> More alt

About The Nine Inch Nails

Reznor named his act Nine Inch Nails and was signed by TVT Records. The tracks from the then titled “Purest Feelings” were reworked and released as “Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. The album was a huge success, spending 113 weeks on the Billboard 200, and became the first independently released album to go platinum. Singles like “Head Like A Hole” and “Sin” established Nine Inch Nails and industrial rock. The new music style mixed the classic instruments of a rock band with white noise and other electronic music practices.

Reznor may have recorded the music himself, but Nine Inch Nails put together a live band to play his vision. That vision blew away audiences at the first Lollapalooza and became known for destroying their instruments at the end of the intense live show.

Nine Inch Nails followed “Pretty Hate Machine” with “Broken in 1992. The album became more guitar-based after Reznor’s experience touring with a live band. The EP won two Grammy Awards, one for “Happiness in Slavery” and the other for “Wish”.

Reznor worked on a number of remixes under the Nine Inch Nails, and fans had to wait five years until the next full length album release. The release, “The Fragile”, came out in 1999 and the long awaited album went platinum twice. Reznor played with fans in different regions of the world, releasing three separate singles in three different regions. “The Day the World Went Away” was released in North America, “We’re in this Together” was released in Europe and Japan, and “Into the Void” was released in Australia.

Reznor returned to a producer role for a number of artists before returning in 2005 with another full length Nine Inch Nails album. “With Teeth” received mixed critical response, some comparing it to vintage NIN and others calling it contrived. The next release from Nine Inch Nails came only two years after “With Teeth”. “Year Zero” debuted with songs directed at the presidential administration and received favorable reviews all around.
