They named the band Nickelback, which was derived from the nickel in change that Mike Kroeger returned to customers when he was an employee at a Starbucks coffee shop

In 1998, the band felt that their managers could not take them to the level they aimed to attain. So they fired them and started managing the band themselves. Mike Kroeger handled all the distribution, brother Chad handled all the radio tracking, and Ryan Vikedal handled all the bookings. The band also   invested $30,000 into a brand new album titled, “The State.” It was released on an independent label in January 2000. The release coincided with a period when Canadian content requirements were increased and local rock radio began desperately seeking out homegrown product. Then they discovered Nickelback's single "Leader of Men." Following the airplay they received Nickelback toured extensively to promote the album “The State.” Their tour was a huge success, 200 shows later the band had gone from being virtually anonymous to performing in front of over a million people with the likes of Creed, 3 Doors Down, Fuel, and many more more. Their ballooning popularity was noticed by the music industry and  “The State” was grabbed by Roadrunner/Island and EMI. The album eventually sold 500,000 copies.

To record their next album “Silver Side up,” the band decided to work with producer Rick Parashar(Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog). The album was done in five weeks flat and was mixed by Randy Staub (Metallica, U2). The killer combination of Parashar and Staub, Nickelback's growing popularity, and the quality of their songs drove Silver Side Up to the top of music charts around the world. Their hit single "How You Remind Me" became a smashing hit. This was only the second time in music history that a Canadian band had been number one on both the Canadian and U.S. rock charts at the same time. After their mainstream success, Kroeger moved a step ahead and produced Vancouver natives Default, he also collaborated with Saliva singer Josey Scott for the song “Hero” on the Spider man soundtrack.

Their next installment, “The Long Road” arrived in 2003. The single "Someday" rocketed to #7 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Despite some critical back lash, the album sold five million copies worldwide and was supported by a successful international tour. The band let go of  Ryan Vikedal in February, 2005. Just a month later the band announced that former 3 Doors Down drummer Daniel Adair was Vikedal's replacement. The band then started work on a new album “All the Right Reasons” and released it in October 2005. The album features guest artists Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top's and the late Dimebag Darrel from Pantera. They are the new sensations of Rock and they tour extensively around the country. Their songs are electrifying and powerful, their live performances make the crowds go wild.
