Soon the band earned recognition because of some original tracks very well written by Dawson, and soon the band was singed with Columbia. Well, this was the beginning of great journey but at the same time the band went through certain changes in the line up of the band. Well Dave Torbert replaced Lesh and eventually Spencer Dryden (from the Jefferson Airplane) became the permanent member of the band as a drummer. Another member Garcia was a member of both New Riders and Grateful Dead heartily joined the band.
Soon the band hit the road but their schedule got too hectic and it again went through a change as Speckled Bird replaced Buddy Cage. With this new line up the band recorded their next four albums, three of these albums were studio albums and the fourth was a live album which was released in November, 1971. Well, the band developed their unique sound further by adding some new sounds eventually their music became more assertive.

With this new sound the band issued their next album "The Adventures of Panama Red," this release received huge critical and commercial acclaim. Once again the band went through a sudden change in February, 1974 as Torbert left the band to form another band Kingfish, this was a sudden shock for the band but he was replaced by the experienced Skip Battin. Unfortunately, Battin quit the band to rejoin his earlier band the "Flying Burrito Brothers." In 1982, with their next release "Feelin'Alright," the band dissolved. Though the band, resurrected once again with a different lineup comprising of Rusty Gautier and Gary Vogenson. Their music blends folk and country rock.
