He also showed some interest in the kitchen sink dramas of the late 1950s and early 1960s, Coronation Street's Elsie Tanner, as well as the playwright, novelist and poet Oscar Wilde. In 1978, Morrissey briefly substituted Slaughter & the Dogs singer Wayne Barrett, recording four songs with the band before proceeding further.
In 1982, Morrissey along with guitarist Johnny Marr formed The Smiths. This band came to be known as one of the most popular and influential bands of the alternative rock movement. The works of this band included some of Morrissey's darkly witty lyrics and Marr's melodic and densely layered music. The band achieved prominence in the UK, Ireland, and Australia, and developed into a cult phenomenon in the United States of America. The band came to be known on college radio charts with songs such as "How Soon Is Now?" and "Panic". This band broke up in 1987 when Marr and Morrissey acknowledged that their interests started differing.
