The band was formed by guitarist Roger Miller, bassist Clint Conley and drummer Peter Prescott. Martin Swope joined the band in 1979. The band was first active from 1979 to1983, and then reformed again in 2002. In the present line-up Martin Swope is not there, and in his place, Bob Weston has joined the band as tape manipulator and sound engineer. All the members have formal musical training in modern classical music.
The talented musical group has given many hit numbers from time to time. Their innovative experiments are always relentlessly intense and dynamic. In fact, the band challenged the prevailing idioms of punk without losing its power and immediacy with their creations. Earlier, the band had a limited number of fans as most of their recordings were released on Boston-based Ace of Heart Records. But today, its a totally different story, now they are widely acknowledged as one of the best groups in the music industry.
Mission of Burma have three studio albums released till date. The first one titled, 'Vs.' was the only full studio album that the band released during the 1980s. The album was released under the label of Rykodisc in 1982. Their second album, 'ONoffON' was released on May 4, 2004 on Matador Record and it was produced by Bob Weston in collaboration with Rick Harte and the band itself.
The last album released by Mission of Burma was, 'The Obliterati' in 2005 on Matador Records. It was earlier named as Aluminum Washcloth. It was a huge hit and was named as the 33rd best record of 2006 by Pitchfork Media and was even placed 50th in the Pazz & Jop poll. The tracks of the album include 2wice; Spider's Web; Donna Sumeria; Let Yourself Go; 1001 Pleasant Dreams; Good, Not Great; 13; Man in Decline; Careening With Conviction; Birthday; The Mute Speaks Out; Is This Where?; Period and Nancy Reagan's Head. There are even two EPs released by the band entitled, 'Signals, Calls and Marches' in 1981 and 'Four Hands EP' in 2004.
