Background:
The Minnesota Orchestra performed its inaugural concert on November 5, 1903. It was founded as Minneapolis Orchestra, and rapidly it acclaimed huge fame in its home city and abroad. The Minnesota Orchestra played its first successful regional tour in 1907. In 1911, it performed its first big city concert in Chicago, and in 1912, it made its New York debut at the famous Carnegie Hall. Besides playing in US, the Orchestra has played in Canada, Australia, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. The Orchestra has been regularly playing at the Carnegie Hall for the last nine decades.

In the beginning of 1920s, it became one of the very first to be heard on recordings. In 1923, Orchestra played a nationally broadcast concert under the famous guest conductor Bruno Walter. Since then, it has been consistently recording and broadcasting. The Orchestra made its landmark Mercury Living Presence LP recordings; those were quite famous in the 1960s, under great music directors like Stanislaw Skrowaczewsk and Antal Dorati.
The Orchestra has already appeared on other famous labels as well, including, CBS, Philips, Telarc, EMI/Angel, Virgin Classics and Argo. Under the direction of Eiji Oue, Orchestra made seventeen highly acclaimed discs for Reference Recordings. In January 2005, it released its five-disc initiative to record the consummate Beethoven symphonies on the BIS label. In 2003, in honor of its centennial season, Orchestra issued Minnesota Orchestra at One Hundred: a completed collection of recordings and broadcasts, a 12-CD set featuring all the popular and never before heard broadcasts and recordings dating from between 1924-2003. Currently a 98-member ensemble performs nearly 200 concerts each year. Symphony's award-winning concert broadcasts which are produced by produced by Minnesota Public Radio and very well distributed by American Public Media reach approximately 200,000 listeners each week. Besides, performing in traditional concerts, the Orchestra connects with approximately 85,000 music lovers annually. With a very grand history of performing and commissioning new music, the Orchestra continues to nourish a genuine commitment to contemporary composers.
The famous ensemble has premiered and commissioned approximately 175 successful compositions since 1903, including the great works by: Dominick Argento, John Corigliano, Aaron Copland, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Ellen Taaffe. The Orchestra grabbed Award for American Programming in 2004. Currently, the orchestra is conducted by Osmo Vänskä. He led the Orchestra on a hugely popular eleven-city Europen Tour- including performances in Germany, Austria, Scotland, Finland and England in 2005.
