Mel Tillis, country music singer and songwriter, was born on August 8, 1932 in Tampa Florida, and raised up in Pahokee, Florida. "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy" are amongst his popular songs. He has received the CMA Awards' most sought after award, Entertainer of the Year. Mel is also the receiver of the Golden Voice Entertainer Award for 2001. He also won the 2001 Golden R.O.P.E. Songwriter Award.

Before creating a place for himself in the music world, he worked as a baker in the United States Air Force. Even while working with the Air Force, he had formed a band called 'The Westerners' which performed at the local clubs. After leaving the military Tillis wrote hit songs like I'm Tired," "Honky Tonk Song," and "Tupelo County Jail".
Between 1958 to 1988 Tillis gave nearly six dozen country hits, and 'I Ain't Never' became his biggest country hit. In 1976 he received the "Entertainer of the Year" award from the Country Music Association. He is renowned as a song writer too, his song "Detroit City," for Bobby Bare was number one on the U.S. country charts. After that many popular artists have covered it. The hit song "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" sung by Kenny Rogers too was written by Tillis. Normally while speaking Tillis stutters, but it disappears when he sings. In 1972 he was inducted into Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Apart from singing and writing, he has donned the hat of an actor too. He is also a comedian who is loved by all. In the 70s he won the comedian of the year award for six years. He was the spokesman of Whataburger company and even sang for it's television advertisement.
Tillis formed a group by the name of 'Old Dogs', in 1988 and Jerry Reed, Bobby Bare, and Waylon Jennings are the other members of the musical group. In his career spanning 45 years, he has performed all over the United States , Canada, England and other countries. He has also appeared in popular shows like 20/20, The Tonight Show, The 700 Club, Prime Time Country, 60 Minutes, Crook & Chase, David Letterman, and has hosted Music City News Awards and Music City Tonight.
