About Mariah Carey

She was born in Long Island in 1970 to a white mother and black father, making her early life difficult as she grew up as a multi-racial child long before society had begun to learn to accept such a fact. She also endured a divorce that essentially expelled her father from her life. Suddenly the bright future as a child of a former opera singer and an aeronautical engineer became a difficult journey in a suburb in New York as the daughter of a mother that had to work several jobs. Carey herself supported her early studio time after high school with a part time job as a beautician.

Her life changed after moving to New York City and being in the right place at the right time, leaving her demo for Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola. Mottola found her and made her an R&B sensation at the age of 20. He would also eventually make her his wife. The early career success came at a time when really straightforward R&B was a dominant force on the chart. Her first few albums mirrored this fact in their style, which took advantage of her five octave-range and ability to waver between notes in her melismatic style.

Eventually the popular music scene shifted toward hip hop. The record company fought her desire to try and include another influence in her work, fearing that some of her more conservative fan base would be turned away. They may have, but the album Daydream attracted many more. The album went diamond in the United States and only increased her international profile.

From 1996 to 2000 Mariah Carey seemed on top of the world. She explored new artistic and personal freedom as her relationship with Mottola degraded and ultimately ended in divorce. The century ended with Carey flaunting her voice, sexuality, and artistic exploration.

The first half of the 21st century was not so kind. Glitter was a box office disaster as a movie and a gigantic disappointment an album. The media seemed to turn on her, though she would re-emerge in 2005 with the album The Emancipation of Mimi. She again returned to her sexuality and a rekindled voice. She seemed the hip hop personification of a cougar, even marrying actor/comedian Nick Cannon.

Today Mariah Carey tickets are once again something to behold in the pop and dance world. Her newest album has been highly anticipated, as has her promotional tour, the Angels Advocate (for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel).
