Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen tickets have been popular throughout the world since the Canadian singer-songwriter first emerged onto the music and art scene in 1956. Born on September 21, 1934 in Montreal, he was raised in a Jewish middle-class family. His parents encouraged him to closely follow his faith, but while he attended Herzliah High School he studied poetry with Irving Layton and learned to play guitar. It seemed that he was destined to pursue a life as a performer. >> More alt

About Leonard Cohen

He still had a few years before he would become a world-recognized musician though. First he enrolled at McGill University and studied Yeats, Whitman, and Henry Miller. The result of his studying was his book of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies, in 1956. Cohen’s second collection of poems, The Spice-Box of Earth, gave him some acclaim among poetry circles in Canada in 1961. It was not until 1967 that Leonard Cohen would finally enter the world of music, a progression that would sell albums and concert tickets, as well as inspire a whole generation of musicians in folk genre and many others.

First he was a songwriter, scoring the hit Suzanne for Judy Collins. Soon after, after he left the fringe association with the Andy Warhol factory, he met John Hammond from Columbia Records. At the time he was playing at folk festivals, but soon his stage performance was moved to the studio and his first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, was released in 1967. While his presence was still yet to truly be felt in the United States, he sold concert tickets easily to his cult following in the UK.

Throughout the ‘60s and the ‘70s Cohen forged relationships with many influential artists, like director Robert Altman and producer Phil Spector. Leonard’s popularity continued to grow, with tickets going quickly for his tours throughout North America and Europe. The sound of the albums ranged from minimalist folk to a wall of sound wrought with instrumentation.

Eventually the 1970s came to an end, though, and Cohen returned to his minimalist roots, for a little while. The 1980s brought in a synthesizers and Leonard began to incorporate them into his music. He hit the charts in Canada and Europe with “Dance Me to the End of Love” and “Hallelujah,” two songs that became classic covers by any other artists. Leonard Cohen tickets sales continued to wane in the U.S. though, and eventually the singer-songwriter who conquered the rest of the Western Hemisphere abandoned all touring hopes for the country.

Leonard Cohen last toured the U.S. in 1993, after he sold tickets for the tour to promote his album, The Future. He expressed his frustration, criticizing the lack of political awareness, but maintaining his love for the nation. One year later he would disappear from the rest of the world, becoming a Zen Buddhist monk. He emerged from the Mount Baldy Zen Centre near Los Angeles five years later.

The 21st century saw a couple of Leonard Cohen albums, but more importantly, Cohen found that his business former manager had squandered Cohen’s retirement found. Since then, he has been active performing and recording. He even sold tickets again in the U.S. in 2008, for the first time since 1994.
