Once known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal, Lacuna Coil is an alternative metal/gothic metal band from Milan, Italy. Gothic imagery, has been the real inspiration of the band, and the members are popular for making midtempo songs comprising of guitar lines topped with spectacular keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic isolated and unique sound. However after so many years the band has developed more distinct bass line with greater mixing of guitars between the songs. Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh, Type O Negative, My Dying Bride, Imago Mortis, Depeche Mode, and In Flames, and many others have played an important role in influencing the band.

The band Sleep of Right was started by Andrea and Marco but they changed their name to Ethereal, and signed a recording deal with Century Media. But the name was already being used and for the last time changed their name to Lacuna Coil. They released their self tittled EP in 1998. After that they went off on a tour to show solidarity with label-mates Moonspell.
After their second European tour they recorded In a Reverie, their first full-length album. After the release they again went off on a European tour to support their album. In 2000 they released another EP "Half-Life" and the very next year they followed it by an album "Unleashed Memories." In 2002 they released their other album Comalies. Heaven's a Lie, the first single from the album started getting radio and media attention after almost a year of release. It was able to catapult the band into the mainstream. Swamped, the second single too got a considerable amount of airplay. The popularity of the song resulted in, it being used in the video game "Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines." For both the songs, music videos were made and they were beamed on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. Comalies not only got name and fame for the band but it also became the best-selling CD in Century Media's history. The band with increasing popularity was busy performing at clubs in America and Europe but they did find time to perform at Ozzfest. In 2006 they released their eagerly awaited and anticipated album Karmacode. The first single of the album, which also has a video "Our Truth", has been featured in the movie Underworld: Evolution. The video has been aired by MTV. The singles "Our Truth" and "Fragile", had been played during the European tour but under some other name. As always after the release of the album the band along with Rob Zombie set off on a tour of North America. They also appeared at Ozzfest 2006 on the main stage.
