The members of Kerrang! were friends in grade school. The drummer used to listen to radio constantly as a child. The drummerdiscovered his love of music by listening to his grandfather's music collection. Kerrang! began playing at Boss, a college dive bar. The group kept asking the local radio station to play their track.

Kerrang! were uneasy after releasing the debut release, but were happy when they heard their music on the radio for the first time. All the members quit their day jobs to focus on their music.
Kerrang! realized that they were truly working musicians after the band’s first fan club was started in 1981 by Anna Hilgendorf. The fan club quickly grew from a few dozen in Seattle to a few thousand nation wide.
