Andrew McMahon started his musical career with Something Corporate right out of high school. Within the time span of three years the band came out with three albums. Then something Corporate went on a hiatus after exhaustive touring. While recording "Locked Doors" McMahon felt that the song was totally different from what Something Corporate did. He then decided that if he ever released the song it would be on his solo album. This idea had seemed bizarre at that time, but with Something Corporate taking a break, McMahon had time to realize his wish. He began to write his own songs with no intention of releasing it. The songs that he wrote were more therapeutic and personal.

His songs dealt with "coming home, and having home be way different than he had remembered it, abandoning a lot of people, and things, that he had normally been so attached to, exploring and being okay with himself, and not having to make excuses for who he is, and accepting who he is ", according to McMahon himself. He had just planned to record the song, but when he saw that the songs were coming out good, he decided to release it. He invested his own money for the production but eventually Maverick Records signed him. Finally in 2005 his debut solo album Everything in Transit was released by Maverick.
The critics as well as the fans loved his endeavor and the album did pretty well. Everything In Transit is an autobiographical album, the story of McMahon has been weaved beautifully into its liner notes. The album begins in a true California mood, its laid back song "Holiday From Real," sets the tone of the album. A summer tour was organized in support of the album, but it was called off after McMahon was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. He had to undergo a bone marrow transplant. He has fully recovered from the clutches of cancer. Jack's Mannequin performed at the opening day of Summerfest on June 28, 2007 in Milwaukee, WI. McMahon's personal appeal, his wonderful voice and piano playing talent made the show a hit. With Jack's Mannequin and Everything In Transit McMahon has expressed his hidden feelings and the turmoil his life went through. He plans to get back to his old band Something Corporate and infuse new energy to it. His solo project was well appreciated and he hopes that the fans would continue to support Something Corporate after it reforms.
