About Jack Hanna

This eminent personality was born on January 2, 1947 in Knoxville. His perseverance and assiduousness helped Jack Hanna to become the Director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. He served as a Director in this zoo for more than a decade. He had incorporated modern technologies and amenities for enhancing the attraction of this zoo. The initiatives, which were taken by Hanna, helped this zoo to become extremely popular among the masses. Shaggy hair, khaki safari outfit, Southern twang etc are some of the inseparable features of Hanna that gave him a distinct look. In his lifetime, he was esteemed to be the best animal expert in the United States.

When Hanna was just eleven years old, he began to work as a volunteer under a veterinarian. From the early stage of his life, his infatuation for animals was noticeable. When he was pursuing his study in Muskingum College in business and political sciences, he got into troubles for rearing some animals in his room. The decisive stage of his career came when he got a chance to work in a wildlife adventure company. Within a few days, he was offered to work in the Central Florida Zoo and there he worked continuously for two years. Another turning point of his career came when the famous Columbus Zoo offered him a job in 1978.

He became the director of this zoo within a short span of time. When Hanna joined in this zoo, a complete anarchy was reigning there. There were no modern facilities available and the zoo was suffering from lack of coordination between various departments. It was Jack Hanna who first took initiative and increased the efficiency of the staffs of the zoo by making a perfect co-ordination between various departments. For popularizing Columbus Zoo, Hanna began to appear frequently in various television programs. He had hosted in the popular program “Hanna’s Ark” which was broadcasted by the WBNS. His jovial presentation helped this program to gain popularity. Besides that, Hanna also appeared in David Letterman’s Talk Show and “Good Mourning America”.

It was Hanna who first introduced habitat environment in this zoo in lieu of cage-like enclosures. People began to flock to this zoo, which had undergone a complete face-lift. Hanna had written many children books. One of his famous books is “Monkeys on the Interstate” which was published in 1989. People magazine selected him in the list of “50 Most Beautiful People”. In his long career, he had made some cameo appearance in some popular television shows for example: Nancy Grace, Larry King Live, Hollywood Squares etc.
