Hoobastank

This popular group takes bits and pieces of Weezer's powered-up punk-pop, mixes in some of Limp Bizkit's adolescent guitar crunch, and adds a dash of Faith No More's anglo-funk. It's a successful blend that allows the group to be embraced by the nu-metal crowd for their riffs, while also appealing to the sensitive kids with their poppy poignancy. >> More alt

About Hoobastank

Originally formed in 1994 in Agoura Hills, California, USA, Hoobastank broke into the mainstream at the start of the new millennium alongside fellow "melodic metal" bands Incubus and Puddle Of Mudd. Borrowing elements from challenging groundbreakers such as Faith No More and Tool, the quartet comprises Douglas Robb (vocals), Dan Estrin (guitar), Markku Lappalainen (bass) and Chris Hesse (drums). They began playing primarily around the California area during the mid-90s, including at noted venues such as the Palace and the Universal Amphitheatre. In July 1998, the band issued their debut, They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To, a self-produced and financed recording that caused a buzz among several major labels, leading to the quartet eventually signing with Universal Records. Their major label debut, Hoobastank, was released in November 2001 and immediately caused a splash with mainstream rock radio and MTV. The follow-up The Reason was even more successful, climbing steadily up the US charts and eventually reaching the Top 5 in spring 2004. The title track also performed strongly on the singles chart.

Put a band together with influences like Faith No More, Tool, and Fishbone, let each member add unique influences ranging from Phish to Guns n Roses to Trance music. Enter Hoobastank. Flash back to July of 1998 and enough money saved up to self release the first album They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To, spreading the Hoobastank sound across Southern California, throughout the United States, and as far as the UK, Brazil, Russia, and Israel.

Even further back to the summer of 1994 when Dan and Doug and Markku started writing music together, and then to early 1995 when Chris answered the right newspaper ad to complete the quartet. Forward a bit to the summer of 1995. The Roxy in Los Angeles. The first show: the lights, the adrenaline and the fans. The fans like you that have enabled Hoobastank to consistently sell out local shows, to play up and down California and Arizona, and to play venues as large as the Palace and even the Universal Amphitheatre.

And then look to what is almost yesterday. A band that has matured and grown enough to get signed to Island/Defjam Records and be picked up by the booking agency CAA, and then to tomorrow: a new album that will set new standards for and a tour that will bring the energetic Hoobastank sound even closer to you.
