The Goo Goo Dolls have been able to entertain with the best of them since they emerged onto the rock scene in 1986 in Buffalo. The group has sold tickets to world wide tours, but began in local clubs around the Buffalo area. The band has gone through massive changes since the beginning. The Goo Goo Dolls chose their name because their original name made it difficult to advertise. The group originally played concerts as a group that mixed heavy metal, pop rock, and punk rock. The original lead singer, even for the first albums, was not John Rzeznik, it was actually George Tutuska.

Royalty issues led to the departure of Tutuska from the group and the addition of Mike Malinin in 1995. The success of the song “Name” led to a change in labels from Metal Blade to the parent company, Warner Bros. The popularity of the song, which would resonate for years at concerts, saw the band change their style. Tickets to the Goo Goo Dolls no longer saw the eclectic mix of sound, but a more commercial style of rock.
The difference can be heard between A Boy Named Goo (1995) and Dizzy Up the Girl (1998). The change produced radio hits with “Iris” and “Slide”. Fans of the Goo Goo Dolls backed up the decision with the purchase of enough albums to make the group a certified platinum act and the purchase of tickets that made them an incredibly popular world wide draw.
As the ‘90s wore on the group began to lose some of its popularity, struggling to attain the success of prior albums on Gutterflower (2002) and Let Love In (2006). The Goo Goo Dolls can still sell concert tickets to their tours as fans remember their youth through their memorable singles.
