George Winston did his debut recordings with John Fahey for Fahey's Takoma Records. Initially his album Ballads and Blues vanished without much notice. However, in 1979, William Ackerman spoke with Winston about forming Winston record for Ackerman's new record label - Windham Hill Records. In the beginning George Winston played few slack-key guitar pieces he wished and then he performed a little of his nighttime music on the piano. Ackerman was impressed by the nighttime music and fell in love with it. And this talent became the major aspect for making the record Autumn a best-seller, which Ackerman produced. George Winston thought of the music on Autumn as "Christmas carols for Halloween". Autumn was well- appreciated in Rolling Stone magazine in the year1980 and it soon became the popular record in the Windham Hill catalog. And it held its position for several years. Subsequently each of his albums has sold as a best-seller. December and Winter into Spring both of his talented works went platinum and achieved million-plus sales in the United States. Forest achieved a 1996 Grammy Award for "Best New Age Album".
Winston's release of 2002, Night Divides the Day - The Music of the Doors reminds about the music of fabled 1960s band The Doors and turns over it into solo piano. Winston tries to take inspirations from the music to a more passive medium, without missing any of its creative ingeniousness. The album has been a big hit with Winston lovers and Doors fans similarly.
Besides being a classic pianist and creating fabulous compositions and performances, he is an established blues harmonica and slack-key guitar performer. While he primarily plays these instruments in shows only, and not on recordings, both his harmonica and guitar playing can be enjoyed on his album Remembrance: A Memorial Benefit, which was produced shortly after the September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the United States.
