Among the prominent musical genres that are preferred by the music buffs of USA, funk music deserves a special mention. The nation has produced a number of eminent music artists dealing with this genre but few have managed to reach the cult status that George Clinton has managed in his prolific career. He is regarded as the main developer of P-Funk. During the 1970’s he set the stage on fire with his mind blowing performances in bands like Parliament and Funkadelic. About George Clinton
George Clinton was born in North Carolina in 1941. In his youth, he used to work as a barber. There he set up a doo-wop band named the Parliaments. Even though the band met with some initial hiccups, its fortune turned after its rechristening as the Parliament and Funkadelic.
In the first part of the 1980’s, George produced a number of singles albums but these had inputs from the core musicians of P-Funk. He signed a pact with Capitol Records in 1982 as a single artist. One track that became hugely popular is ‘Loopzilla’ and it was succeeded by ‘Atomic Dog’. While the former climbed up its way in the R&B charts top 20 slots, the latter reached the numero uno position. The subsequent 4 years saw Clinton coming up with 3 studio albums. He also did a live album. However, during this phase he got entangled in legal hassles and copyright related complications.
The turning point in his career came in the year 1985, when he was signed by Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band members adored Clinton’s music style and they sought his help in creating their album named ‘Freaky Styley’. He contributed behind the lyrics and vocals of the title track. Even though it did not become a chartbuster immediately after its release, with the popularity of the group soaring its sales crossed 500000. Like many of his contemporaries, Clinton’s fame went through a roller coaster ride after the mid 1980’s though he bounced back in the 1990s. A number of rappers began sampling his tracks in this phase.
Apart from donning the hats of a musician and singer, Clinton has also made guest appearances in a number of movies. Among these films, ‘House Party’, ‘Graffiti Bridge’, ‘Good Burger’ deserves mention. He also lent his voice for a popular 2004 video game named ‘, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’. This game includes his famous track Loopzilla. He had to face the most difficult part of his life in 2003 when he was accused of possessing cocaine and drugs. However, these traumatic incidents could not deter his spirit and he made a comeback on stage just 2 weeks after the arrest. In 2005, he set up a record label named ‘The C Kunspyruhzy’. This singer allows the audience to record his live shows for personal viewing and this has ensured a steady fan base.
