Genesis is one of the most successful rock bands through the 1970s, 1980s, and the 1990s. Genesis enjoyed a stature that was superceded only by the Rolling Stones and the Kinks. The band also served as the launch pad for Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.

Genesis begun in a band formed by Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks in 1965 named the Garden Wall. Fellow students Anthony Phillips and Michael Rutherford at the same Charterhouse School, Surrey, were part of another group Anon. The two groups merged. Soon Gabriel, Rutherford, drummer Chris Stewart, Banks, and Phillips soon got together to form New Anon. They recorded a six-song demo and the songs were written by Rutherford and Phillips. The the spark came as Jonathan King, a fellow ex-student, recording artist and producer who heard
the tape. He got the group to continue working for the studio. He was also the one who renamed the band Genesis.
In 1967 the group got to do their first formal recording sessions. It begun with the "The Silent Sun," their debut single which was released in the beginning of 1968. They continued to work on the music simultaneously changing the outgoing band members. Genesis became one of the first groups to sign up with the out of luck Charisma label. They recorded their second album Trespass with them. Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett came to be part of the band after a couple of replacements. The band was now ready for success and that was proved with Nursery Cryme, their next album.
Th ealbum Foxtrot was issued in the fall of 1972. This was one event that proved to be the flashpoint in Genesis's history. The track "Supper's Ready," exhibited a writing that was as sophisticated as anyt other thing in progressive rock. The lyrics were complex, serious and clever. The release of their double LP The Lamb Lies Down in late 1974 on the Broadway. The release marked the happy culmination of the group's early history. And Then There Were Three came in in 1978. This was a change of direction by abandoning progressive rock for a softer pop sound.
Their 1991 album We Can't Dance continued the magic run into the 1990s. It became Number One in England and soon number four in America. This marked Collins' last album with the group. Ray Wilson replaced him. Genesis bounced back to fame in 1997 with Calling All Stations. This was the proof of the strength of Genesis.
