Gatsby American Dream had formed due to the break up of Good For Nothing and One Point Two. The members of both these bands had formed a new band called Gatsby American Dream. The demo record of the band was passed on to Rocketstar recording who had helped the band release its debut album called Why We Fight in 2002. Their first show was hugely promoted by Rocketstar and had a packed auditorium of more than 500 people. Soon after the release of the first album, the band saw the entry of Rudy Gajadhar who was a former member of Waxing and Bugs and the exit of Dustin McGhie. In the following year, they released their album called Ribbons and Sugar. This album was an adaptation of Animal Farm by George Orwell. Adapting to literary pieces became a trademark of Gatsby American Dream.
Their next album was called Musically. This album marked a sea-change in their music which had heavy pop rhythms and was high-paced. After exhausting the record deal with Rocketstar, the band had sealed a one-record deal with LLR Recordings. In the Land of Lost Monsters was an album that was developed on the overwhelming response that the band had received after the success of Ribbons and Sugar. The music labels that had approached Gatsby American Dream had told them to focus on the chorus. The band, however did not sacrifice on their signature style for earning a deal. This spirit made them more famous as a band in love with its integrity.
Gatsby American Dream cut their third album, Volcano, with Fearless Records. This album was based on Pompeii as was evident from its tracks. This album focused on the power of emotions. This album refers to many literary pieces like The Lord Of the Rings, Jurassic Park, Lord Of The Flies, Big Adventure, Fable and Speaker of The Dead. The overwhelming success of the album had triggered a tour that also happened to be equally successful. The typical characteristics of the music of Gatsby American Dream is their experimentalism, coupled with rich cultural and pop references. This album had expressed detestation for the cut-throat competition amongst the record labels and Trend Bands of the generation.
In 2006 the band had composed a self titled album. They were flooded with offers for live performances in Seattle. They have also performed at the Colgate University. Ever since the release of this album, the band has been on a hiatus and the members are seen in other side projects.
