A renowned British rock band having a Scottish origin, Franz Ferdinand was set up in 2001 in Glasgow. The naming of the group was influenced by Archduke Franz Ferdinand who had an Austrian lineage. The band consists of Bob Hardy, Paul Thomson, Nick McCarthy and Alex Kapranos. Each of them takes care of the different departments like vocals, bass, keyboard and guitar etc. The debut album of the band which was self titled, met with tremendous public response and climbed its way up in the popularity charts. All of the band members hail from musical backgrounds and they have some experience of working in different bands. The band members have earlier worked in bands like Yummy Fur, Embryo, 10p Invaders and The Karelia in the 1990s. Paul and Alex were the members of Yummy Fur. Bob learnt his lessons in bass from Kapranos. The turning point of the band came in 2003 when they signed a pact with Domino Records. During the later part of 2003, Domino Records released a previously recorded EP of the band with the title ‘Darts of Pleasure’. It met with moderate success. Thereafter the band got its first taste of critical acclaim with the attainment of the coveted ‘Phillip Hall Radar Award’.
From the last quarter of 2007, the band members have been involved with the production and recording of their 3rd studio album. This is slated for a late 2008 release. The band members have revealed in an interview with ‘The Independent’ newspaper that their forthcoming release will contain a considerable amount of African influences.
Franz Ferdinand is a band that has become popular for its employment of extensive Russian theme based imagery in its single and album covers. Apart from the album covers, the band has also used Russian themes and topics in its promotional music videos. Dadaism, which is a nihilistic art movement, influenced the stylish music video meant for ‘Take Me Out’. The band members are open for collaborating with other music artists. As per the latest news, Kapranos is about to start taking the inputs from a Canadian artist. Besides, the band is taking the aid of Xenomania for their new album.
There has been much speculation in the music industry about the uniqueness of the band’s name. Curious as it may sound, the first inspiration for the name came to the members from watching a racehorse having the name The Archduke. This led them to contemplate on the plausibility of using Franz Ferdinand’s name. The band members have said they like the name as it has historical significance. The assassination of the duke led to the formation of the First World War, an event that changed the world. Paul has the more ambitious dream of making the band’s name more popular than its historical counterpart. One of the band’s songs, ‘All for You Sophia’, makes an implicit reference to the killing of the duke and his spouse.
