Filter was the product of Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang in 1993 in Cleveland. The group’s first album, Short Bus, took the duo from small time players in Cleveland to a giant commercial success in 1995. The single “Hey Man, Nice Shot” became a Top 20 single on the U.S. rock charts. The song came with some controversy as some believed the group using Budd Dwyer’s public suicide was immoral while others believed the song was actually a reference to Kurt Cobain’s suicide.

The platinum success of the album forced Patrick and Liesegang to recruit other musicians so they could tour in support of their album. Filter expanded to include Geno Lenardo on guitar, Frank Cavanaugh on bass, and Matt Walker on drums. The group began to work after the success of the first album and concert series, but become noted for their contributions to soundtracks and released The Soundtrack EP.
Filter eventually was able to schedule time to work on a sophomore album and released Title of Record in 1999. The group had gone through some changes though, losing Liesegang and Walker. The new group had a Patrick, Lenardo, Cavanaugh, and new drummer Steve Gillis. Again the album would go platinum and the band would travel the world selling tickets to their concerts. “Take a Picture” became the signature single, marking a change from the hard industrial rock of the first album.
The third album, The Amalgamut, but failed to reach any kind of certification as Robert Patrick began to spin out of control. His entry into rehab in 2002 marked the end of a short tour. Filter came back form the brink though, releasing Anthems For The Damned in May 2008. A sober Patrick is working with Mitchell Marlow on guitar, John Spiker on bass, and Mike Fineo on drums on a completely revamped lineup.
Filter has extended its tour, with more shows scheduled for the summer after finishing up in Europe in June. The final leg of the tour for the politically-charged album Anthems For The Damned will begin on June 12 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and go until July 27 in Altamont, New York.
