About Eddie Palmieri

Palmieri was born and raised in Spanish Harlem, where he developed an early interest in music alongside his brother Charlie who would go on to be a salsa legend. He began to learn the piano and when he was just 11 years old, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall. This was an accomplishment in itself for a young boy from the Bronx but Palmieri was already thinking beyond this. He wanted to be part of a band and by the 1950s, Palmieri had found regular gigs with a number of bands. He was finally able to start his own band, which he called 'La Perfecta'. Palmieri's innovativeness and acute sense of musicality would come into play here when he added a trombone section to replace the trumpets. This had never been done before in Latin music and after initially being blown off as something crazy, Palmieri's new band sound soon caught on like wildfire.

Palmieri's main influences were jazz and a number of jazz musicians but he was also greatly intrigued by the music of his family roots. He found the cross-cultural music of Cuba to be fascinating and endeavored to bring it into the arrangements he put together in the future. As a band leader, Plamieri's signature style would be an infusion of jazz elements with Afro-Caribbean styles.

Palmieri has not only been a prolific musician, he has been a highly decorated one as well. He has eight Grammys to his name and was awarded the Eubie Blake award in 1991. His recordings are present in the archives of the National Museum of American History and he has an honorary doctorate from the Berkley College of Music. More notably, he was also a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, New York Chapter and took special efforts to create a new category for Latin Jazz.

Though Palmieri officially retired from the music scene a few years ago, he is still very much involved in making music and has even formed a new band, 'La Perfecta II".
