About Eddie Izzard

Izzard’s path to comedy began with tragedy when his mother passed away from cancer when he was only a year old. From there he dabbled in comedy, but first chose to follow the path of his father and entered the University of Sheffield for a degree in accountancy.

Izzard was quickly kicked out of the program and he began to work on the streets of Europe and the United States as a street performer. Eventually he moved off the streets and tried stand up comedy. His first appearance was at The Comedy Store in London in 1987.

His early years on stage often had him just adlibbing Billy Connolly’s routine. Eddie Izzard began to focus on his own material and by the early ‘90s he was making a name for himself in England.

Izzard’s shows ‘Live at the Ambassadors in 1993 and “Definite Article” in 1996 won British Comedy Awards. He tried to break into the American market in 1996 bringing “Definite Article” to New York City after its run in England ended, but failed to become known.

It was not until “Dress to Kill” in 1999 that the U.S. started paying attention to him. Izzard started to work in movies, with small parts, immediately. He landed a small supporting role in “Mystery Men”.

His acting career actually began in London though, in 1994 in the West End production of David Mamet’s “The Cryptogram” at the Comedy Theatre. Eddie Izzard continued to find leading roles in the West End, playing the starring role in “900 Oneonta” and the title character in “Edward II” in 1995.

Izzard played his first role on Broadway in the Tony Award nominated “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg”. His career extended to television with “The Riches”, where he plays the father of a band of modern day gypsies that poses as a powerful lawyer and family. He also writes for the show.

Izzard continues to perform stand up, utilizing his gift for mimicry to portray characters like God, John F. Kennedy, and Sean Connery. His act covers a wide gamut of material from historical events to the every day chores. His latest material tends to blatantly use the Internet phenomena Wikipedia.

Eddie Izzard is also known for his brandish cross-dresser, claiming that he is really just a guy who likes to wear makeup.
