Background:
Dream Theater has set all new standards for progressive metal music. Formed in 1985 at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston this band is a talented group professionals who have more than passion for music. The band consists of James LaBrie (vocals), John Myung (bass), John Petrucci (guitars), Mike Portnoy (drums) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards). The band was initially known as Majesty but could not
achieve any major success. They roped in keyboardist Kevin Moore and singer Chris Collins but the later eventually left. He was replaced by Charlie Dominici. Another band by th same name forced them to drop the title and take up Dream Theater after a demolished Californian cinema.

In 1989, Dream Theater released their debut album 'When Dream And Day Unite.' It caused huge ripples in the underground progressive rock scene. But this was only the beginning of the journey for the band. The band had already made some changes as replacing Dominici with James LaBrie. The band signed with Atco to release their second album in 1992 as 'Images And Words.' This album featured the hit ''Pull Me Under.'' Their genre of music was pacy and catchy. A mix of rock and neoclassical it was both impulsive and thoughtful. The style became a rage and was amplified by them in their third album 'Awake' which was released in 1994. 'A Change Of Seasons' was another experiment of sorts that came in 1995.
Then in 2002 came 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.' This was the band's new concept album. This was an over-ambitious effort with a double CD experimenting in radically new sonic avenues and styles. Almost half of the album is covered by the 42-minute title track Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. The sound resembles the Yes and King Crimson from the 1970s. The other two tracks The Great Debate and The Glass Prison
showcase the band's technical prowess. Octavarium is their eighth studio album. It also marks 20th anniversary of the band. "It's pretty incredible. Especially given the nature of what we do. I think maybe that's probably been the secret to our longevity, is that we've never fit in. But it's still incredible that here we are, 20 years later,
and we're not one of those bands that's just sticking around on the downslide. We're still growing and progressing with each album and tour," says drummer Mike Portnoy.
