Born as Malcolm John Rebennack on 21st December 1940 in New Orleans, he is a singer, lyrists and pianist. Dr. John is the pseudonym under which Malcolm performs on stage. He has proved his versatility by performing effortlessly on the keyboard, piano and guitar. He kick-started his musical career in his early teens and performed at conferences. He stopped playing the guitar after a hand injury. He started playing the bass guitar and later shifted to the piano. Professor Longhair served as an inspiration for Malcolm. >> More alt

About Dr. John

He had performed as a pianist with Rolling Stones in their track Let It Loose in 1972.Dr. john contributed to 1974’s Mocking Bird by James Taylor and Carly Simon. He not only produced but also was the keyboardist and pianist in A Period of Transition by Van Morrison in 1978. His music was used in the movie Such A Night (1988). He has sung Luv dat Chicken in Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits ad. Cannery Row marked Dr. John as a music director.

His music was a blend of acid rock and blues. His intricate stage performances and fetish for strange attires and headdresses intrigued the audience. He was popularly called Doctor John, The Night Tripper. His name originated from the famous voodoo professional of the 19th Century. He released his first album named Gris Gris in 1968. This album was placed in the top 500 list of The Greatest Albums by Rolling Stones Magazine. His next three albums, Babylon, Remedies and The Sun, Moon, And Herbs followed the same style. The last album featured Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. This album established him as an artist capable of creating bohemian style apart from the psychedelic sort.

His next album named Dr. John’s Gumbo is his best album till date. This stressed on the R&B style and it was dedicated to the music form of New Orleans in the 40s and 50s. While retaining the original essence of the past he has introduced elements on jazz and blues. It secured the position in The Top 10 Louisiana CDs by Offbeat Magazines and also placed 402nd in 500 Greatest Albums by Rolling Stone. 1973 saw Dr. John release his next album In The Right Place which made him the brand ambassador of funk music New Orleans. The hit singles from this album were Such A Night and Right Place Wrong Time. This album featured Doug Sahm, Bette Midler ad Bob Dylan. This song was used in Dazed and Confused (1993).

Desitively Bonnaroo, came in 1974. It featured The Meters and Allen Toussaint. It was an album based on funk. So was 1994’s Television. His live performances mainly concentrated on his love for funk. In 1998 he released his album Anutha Zone, where he returned to his trademark psychedelic form. 2006 witnessed one of his best performances at the Jazz a Vienne Festival, characterized by blue and R&B.

He was honoured in The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame in early 2008. He was one of the performers in All Star Saturday Night organized by NBA in February 2008.
