Dio is a heavy metal band led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who formed it in October 1982 after leaving Black Sabbath. Despite the name, the band was not meant to be Ronnie James Dio's solo project, but a whole band. In addition to Ronnie on vocals and keyboards originally, and Vinny Appice on Drums, the band featured Vivian Campbell who played guitar; and Jimmy Bain, bass. Their musical journey, includes more than twenty albums. In 1983, they released their debut album Holy Diver. It sold Platinum in the USA. The next year The Last in Line was relased when the band hired keyboardist Claude Schnell. The album was followed by Sacred Heart in 1985 which won "Show Of The Year" rewards both in 1985 and 1986. In March 1986, Vivian Campbell left the band because of the musical disagreements.
In various interviews, Dio members have also said Campbell assumed that Dio's popularity was only because of him, but this has not been confirmed. Ronnie James Dio started to work on Dream Evil album with Craig Goldie in December 1986. The whole band started training in January 1987 and went to record the album in Village Recorder studios in Los Angeles around March 1987. The album was finished in May 1987. After it's release Dio band was reconstructed introducing other new musicians. The new band released the album Lock up the Wolves. Ronnie united with his former band members in Black Sabbath. However, the reunion was only for one album. After this Ronnie reassembled the band. At this time the guitarist Tracy G became a member of the band. The band made the albums Strange Highways, Angry Machines and Inferno - Last in Live..
The album Angry Machines had a track "God Hates Heavy Metal" but the actual European and US releases didn't include it. In 1994, there were rumors about a project called Vienna, which would've featured Ronnie James Dio, Steve Vai and Cozy Powell. Those rumors were not confirmed and nothing about the project has been mentioned ever since. 2000 saw the release of Dio's eighth album Magica and a compilation- The Very Beast of Dio. Anthology Vol 2. was another compilation in the following year. Their ninth album, Killing the Dragon was released in 2002 through Spitfire records. Master of the Moon featured multi-instrumentalist Jeff Pilson in 2004. This was followed by Evil or Divine - Live In New York City featuring the same show that was released on DVD in 2003. Holy Divine was re-released in April 2006. A new studio album is widely expected to be released in mid-2006.
