Dinosaur Jr. are known for returning lead guitar to indie-rock and, along with their contemporaries the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. Though commercial success eluded the group, they gained a loyal cult following.

In the midst of Western Massachusetts’ “Happy Valley,” there was a small group of hardcore bands. Most notable among them was Deep Wound, with drummer J Mascis and guitarist Lou Barlow. Attending UMASS Amherst, Mascis began to focus on guitar playing over drums. Just as Sonny Sharrock drew his inspiration from Coltrane’s “sheets of sound” approach to the tenor saxophone, J’s musical model was a different instrument. They were formed as Dinosaur in 1983 following the break-up of their band Deep Wound. Shortly afterwards, Murph (Emmett Patrick Murphy III, drums) joined them. Their debut album, Dinosaur was released in 1985. By the end of 1986, a hippie-rock group called Dinosaur sued the band, which changed its name to Dinosaur Jr.
In 1987, Dinosaur Jr. signed to Black Flag's indie label SST and released You're Living All Over Me , which became a sensation. It is considered their best album. Early in 1988, they released the single "Freak Scene," which became a college radio hit, and it led the way for their acclaimed 1988 album, Bug . The band's popularity continued to grow and with that tensions were developing between Mascis and Barlow. In 1989, Mascis told Barlow that the group was breaking up; the following day, he "re-formed" Dinosaur Jr., this time without Barlow, who went on to form Sebadoh. The same year the group had a remarkable hit with the Cure's "Just Like Heaven." Next year, they signed with Sire Records. After "Just Like Heaven," Mascis remained quiet for several years, but starting with Green Mind (1991), Mascis began to record albums almost entirely on his own.
On the subsequent tour, Dinosaur Jr. was supported by Nirvana, whose success with Nevermind soon overshadowed Dinosaur's. The group released an EP, Whatever's Cool With Me , in early 1992 and disappeared for a year. On the 1993 release, Where You Been, the opening track ("Out There") had a video which aired on MTV for a short time. After 1997's Hand It Over, Mascis left the group. In 1999, he released the first of two solo albums under the name J Mascis and the Fog. Dinosaur Jr's career was chronicled in Our Band Could Be Your Life, a book by Michael Azerrad. It's believed that many people have stolen from them, but no one who has come close to really capturing the purity in these records.Experience the thrill in live Dinosaur Jr. concert.
