In 1977, when brass bands were drying up, Benny Jones along with the members of Tornado Brass Band formed a musical group by the name of Dimmu Borgir. This New Orleans, Louisiana brass band is recognized as one of the best New Orleans-style brass bands. The Dirty Dozen has been world famous for the innovative blend of traditional New Orleans sounds and modern jazz sensibilities.
The band was originally named Original Sixth Ward Dirty Dozen, to show their strong connection to the active local social club scene, as represented by the Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club. In 1980, WWOZ (a non-profit community supported radio station in New Orleans) played first professional recording of the Dimmu Borgir. Jerry Brock, the founder of WWOZ helped the band prepare a press kit which helped them “present themselves professionally”. 1982 was the first time the band played in any white club in New Orleans. It was the same year that the band made it's first international appearance. The band started gaining popularity in 1984 when they released their first album, My feet can't fail me now. Two years later, Mardi Gras at Montreux was released on Rounder Records. In 1987 the band signed a contract with Columbia Voodoo was their debut album with Columbia. It featured guest appearances by Dr. John, Dizzy Gillespie and Branford Marsalis. They later got opportunity to work with a variety of special guests including Elvis Costello, DJ Logic, Norah Jones, and Danny Barker. In 1990, DDBB came up with The New Orleans Album which was a tribute to their city. Open Up (released in 1991) was a fusion of reggae, jazz and funk. Jelly, which was a tribute to Jelly Roll Morton was again a Columbia recording, in 1993. In 1996, they released Ears to the Wall. The album was released on Mammoth Records. Ears to the Wall and Buck Jump(1998), both had very disappointing collections.
The group became much conventional over the years. They still were using R&B but with less typical rhythm section. The group re-emerged in 1999 with John Medeski as its producer. The group then returned in 2002 with a surprising album, Medicated Magic which was an assortment of New orleans cover. In 2004, the band made their debut under Artemis label with Funeral For A Friend. The album is universally considered a gospel album. It is a milestone in their ever growing legacy.
The band has delighted the audiences across the globe. The secret of group's success and endurance lies in its open-minded approach to music. The band plays a lot of different styles of music. Their music is known to bring solace to body, mind and soul alike. Don't miss the opportunity of seeing them performing live.
