Devendra Banhart is a singer of folk rock. He writes his own songs and composes the music as well. He was born on May 30, 1981 in Houston. Though Devendra was born in the USA, but he shifted to Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela when he was only 2. He remained there till 13 years of age. This had a profound influence on him. Banhart's music belongs to indie and psyche folk as well as Naturalismo and New Weird America. He writes lyrics that are sometimes weird and naturalistic.

Devendra Banhart came to the limelight years later when he was staying in San Francisco. He had by then attended the San Francisco Art Institute. But after he recorded with Young God Records in New York City he became a household name. Presently, Banhart lives in Los Angeles. Michael Gira of Swans discovered Banhart. His album Oh Me Oh My was released by Gira on Young God Records label belonging to him in 2002. Many albums were also released on this label subsequently. In 2005, Banhart brought out his own record company called Gnomonsong record label together with Andy Cabic and Revolver USA. In the meantime, Banhart helped in the curation of British All Tomorrow's Parties festival held in 2006.
The band of Banhart says that they often rechristen themselves when they come across some names. The present name of the band is Power Mineral. Previously, they were called Fried Hummingbird, Las Putas Locas, Spiritual Boner, Brain Taint, Hairy Fairy Band, Stoner Boner, Bummer Hummer and Bathhouse Of The Winds and many others. Banhart along with his present band called Power Mineral is touring United States. The members of the band are Andy Cabic (Vetiver), Noah Georgeson, Pete Newsom, Kevin Barker (Currituck Co.), Greg Rogove (Priestbird), Luckey Remington, Otto Hauser (Vetiver, Currituck Co., Espers, Nick Castro) and others.
"There's Always Something Happening" by Banhart has appeared on a FINCA benefit compilation. The compilation was done by Natalie Portman on the iTunes. Talks are underway to bring together Banhart and Portman. Banhart became the first artist in contributing the design of for the Yellow Bird Project. An exhibition of the artwork by Banhart along with the late Swiss painter Paul Klee was held from February 24, 2008 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is aptly titled “Abstract Rhythms”. The musical approach of Banhart resembles Marc Bolan, who was the songwriter and singer for the acoustic psych-rock band Tyrannosaurus Rex of the 1960's.
