Deichkind began playing at the college club Cafeteria. Bobby Darin heavily influenced the early work of the band. Deichkind’s members were friends in college. The drummer was encouraged to play by his high school teacher.

got X100.9 to start playing their single and had their friends call in to request the song. A record executive heard it one day and immediately signed the group. All the members quit their other jobs to focus on their record. Deichkind’s first album did not do so well, but the second album was a hit, going platinum. The band plays plenty of arenas, but would rather perform in the smaller venues which they began.
Deichkind knew that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act when Laura Neilson started the first fan club for the band in 1990. After the group’s first North American tour, the fan club grew from the couple dozen fans who heard the group play around Charleston to the thousands who heard them play across the nation.
Deichkind's new record has taken the band in a quite different direction, with a softer edge. The group is in the beginning of the accompanying tour for their most current release. Members of Deichkind hope this tour and the latest project attracts a new group of fans.
