First lead singer and songwriter Dave Matthews had to be coaxed out of his reserved personality to at least record a demo of some of the songs he had written. The original three in the recording studio, Dave Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford, and saxophonist LeRoi Moore then had to get over the fact that they were awful the first time they played together. Then the group, never intended to play beyond the padded walls of a studio, had to gel with a young teenage bassist, Stefan Lessard, a keyboardist, Peter Griesar, they just happened to pick up one day while playing in the bar in which Matthews worked, and a violinist, Boyd Tinsley they had never intended to use beyond the demo.
