Daniel Barenboim –the Argentinean –Israeli pianist and conductor was born in the picturesque Buenos Aires ,Argentina. Born to Russian jews he started off as a pianist and is now a known conductor as well. His close friends include the famous and talented musicians Zubin Mehta, Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.

He was married to Jacqueline du Pre and on her death in 1987 married the pianist Elena Bashkirova in 1988.His association with music began very early in life with piano lessons with his mother from the tender age of five. In August 1950 at the age of seven this young pianist gave his first concert in the Buenos Aires. His parents have been great influence and a guiding force in his love for music. He went on to learn music under very learnt musicians like Nadia Boulanger. His debut as a pianist was in Vienna in 1952.From then on there was no looking back for this great musician and he was on a continuous tour of Europe ,the United States and the Far East performing brilliantly at each of the locations.
His first recording was in the year 1954 . He got his first taste of conducting in 1967with the Philharmonis Orchestra. His musical career progressed by leaps and bounds.He was awarded a Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in 1996. In the year 2004 he was awarded the “Wolf Prize” in Arts and the Buber- Rosenzweig Medal. and he went on to be the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestrea from 1991 to the year 2006.Barenhoim was honoured as the Principal Guest conductor of the La Scala Opera house in Milan, Italy.
He has won several awards as a recognition of his talent. He won the prestigious Grammy awards for Best chamber music in the year 1991 and 1995. The grammy award for best orchestral performance in the year 1992 and grammy award for Best Opera Recording in 2003.
