Dan Wilson talked to a local DJ from K95.5 and got their single on air. The girlfriend of a record executive heard the song and soon after Dan Wilson was signed. The band's members all had odd jobs while they waited for their time to come. Dan Wilson’s first album did not sell well, but received critical acclaim. The second album was a hit and the band was saved from being released by the record company. The group continues to play large venues, but still enjoys performing in smaller clubs on occasion.
Dan Wilson realized that they were truly working musicians as soon as the band’s first fan club was started by Debra Geanopulos in 1977. The club started out small, with just a handful of members around Baltimore. After the band’s first national tour the club grew dramatically, reaching a membership in the thousands.
