Damian Marley was born to Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, who has Miss World in 1976. Damian entered the world in 1978 and as with many of the Marley clan, he developed a taste for music early on. However, unlike most of his siblings, Damian's niche was carved in the realm of deejaying, which is a unique style of Jamaican rapping which many see as the predecessor of hip hop. Damian began performing when he was all of thirteen years old and began to live up to the Marley name.
Damian was nicknamed Junior Gong, a name derived from Bob Marley's own nickname which was Tuff Gong. While his brother Ziggy followed closely in the musical path of his father, Damian diversified and found his own distinct reggae groove, thus setting his sound apart from that of Bob Marley. However, the influence of his father on his music is unmistakable and thus Damian's music remains a magically balanced blend of his own unique artistic identity and the legendary musical legacy of his father.
Damian has three albums till date- Mr. Marley which was released in 1996, Halfway Tree which came out in 2001 and Welcome to Jamrock which was launched in 2005. Damian made a loud and unforgettable impression on the music circuits, snagging a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2002 for his record Halfway Tree. Damian's music was meeting with a large amount of critical and commercial praise and the Grammys weren't stopping there. In 2006, he garnered two more Grammys for his album Welcome to Jamrock, winning for Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Damian keeps his musical ties with his family very much alive and is often seen touring with his brothers Julian and Stephen who are both members of Ghetto Youths Crew. In 2004, the Marley clan got together for the Bob Marley Roots, Rock and Reggae festival that toured 27 stops and featured brothers Ziggy, Ky-Mani, Julian, Stephan and Damian. Also in keeping his father's beliefs and with those of his family, Damian is a Rastafarian and his beliefs in love, life and peace are reflected in much of his music.
