Formed in Germantown, Maryland, in 1991, Clutch combines elements of funk, Led Zeppelin and metal with vocals inspired by Faith No More. The group built a dedicated local following through constant gigging. After just one seven-inch single, Clutch was signed by East West Records. They soon released their 1993 debut album, “Transnational Speedway League”. Playing surprisingly poppy speed-rock, the band includes Neil Fallon , Tim Sult , Dan Maines and Jean Paul Gaster. Their second album followed in 1995, and in 1997 Clutch issued the rarities collection “Impetus”. By the end of 1997, the band had signed a major label contract with Columbia. Their first album for their new label, “The Elephant Riders” was released in the spring of 1998. Pure Rock Fury followed three years later.

Having moved to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, it was inevitable that they would have history play a role in The Elephant Riders. It is not a specifically thematic album, but many of the songs look to the past as a context for storytelling. The song, "Elephant Riders," entertains the idea of elephants being used by artnies during the United States Civil War. There is no factual basis for this other than the names of the places mentioned in the song.
Clutch has performed at least five hundred times after graduating from high school in Germantown. The first show was played in 1991. Many of the shows they have played have been opening slots for bands such as Marilyn Manson, Pantera, Bad Religion, and Prong, just to name a few. Quality fan base continued to thrive for Clutch. Pure Rock Fury appeared in 2001, the similarly uncompromising Blast Tyrant three years later, and Robot Hive/Exodus in 2005. Each of their album is a snapshot of their development as musicians and expresses what they have learnt since the previous release. Their album sales (more than I 00,000 for each release) are fueled mainly by their many national tours. Among Clutch's numerous side releases were a groove-based album (2000's Jam Room), as well as Live at the Googoplex and the rarities record Slow Hole to China, both issued in 2003.
Clutch is a reluctant studio band. As soon as a song is recorded it is only a matter of weeks before it gets changed and they have never performed for anyone other than themselves. They operate as if each show is a secret assembly of free and accepting ear drums. With the exception of the occasional freeloader who digs into their catering, they enjoy the company and always look forward to bigger and better happenings.
