Clarence Greenwood had played a little trumpet in elementary school, but his love of music really blossomed after he started playing the guitar that was missing a few strings in high school and discovered a drum machine while visiting his uncle in Washington, D.C.
His musical ability combined with his poetry to create a hip hop artist who loved to turn simple moments in life into universal anthems as Citizen Cope. He has joined tours with Nellie Furtado and Robert Randolph & the Family Band, selling tickets as the opening act.
Before he could join those concerts, he had to be discovered. That discovery came at the hands of DreamWorks Records in 2000 after he had spent the late ‘90s promoting himself through independent compilations, movie soundtracks, and late night appearances.
Citizen Cope released his self-titled debut album two years later, but felt after his time promoting the album for the company that the release had been mishandled. Leaving DreamWorks, he joined Arista Records, a subsidiary of RCA. There he released the critically acclaimed The Clarence Greenwood Recordings in 2004 and Every Waking Moment in 2006.
Citizen Cope continued to play on major tickets as an opening act or at festivals, but his name began to spread more for his songs in television and film more than his concerts. His tracks have appeared in television shows like Scrubs, One Tree Hill, and Cold Case and have appeared in movies like Prime, Fracture, and Alpha Dog.
The exposure helped his last album, Every Waking Moment find a chart position at number 69 in the United States, the first of his career. He has since left RCA and continues to work independently from his new home in Brooklyn.
Citizen Cope will play a number of concerts and festival dates from July to August, but his main tour is coming is starting on September 24 in Northampton, Massachusetts. The acoustic tour will have concerts scheduled in 19 cities will end on November 8 in San Diego.
