About Built to Spill

The band was formed in 1993, in Bosie, ID. Martsch the main man behind the band. Martsch grew around the Twin Falls, ID, where he formed his very first band, Farm Days, with drummer Andy Capps and bassist Brett Nelson. Interestingly, all the band members were studying in high school. Martsch moved to Boise and jammed up with the local hardcore punk band State of Confusion. After playing some gigs band received a healthy offer from a local indie label C/Z. In 1993, the band issued "Just Kidding." After this release Martsch departed from the band to form his own band.

Then he went on to form "Built to Spill" with drummer Ralf Youtz and bassist/guitarist Brett Netson. In 1993, the band debuted on record and issued their first album "Alternative Wavers." In 1994, the band hit the music stores with their creative breakthrough, "There's Nothing Wrong With Love." This release earned very encouraging reviews. Next year, Martsch formed a side project with K Records honcho Calvin Johnson. Then he formed the new line up of "Built to Spill" with drummer Dave Schneider and bassist James Bertram. Their major gigs include a stint on the second stage of the popular Lollapalooza tour. In early 1996, the band issued a superb compilation of rarities and outtakes, "The Normal Years."

Throughout the musical journey of the band, it went through many rapid changes. Many earlier members left the band. This was a tiring journey for Martsch; finally he made Plouf and Nelson permanent members of the band. With this new line up the band issued, "Like a Secret" in 1999. This album earned rave reviews and also reached the pop charts. In 2000, the band issued "Live" followed by "Ancient Melodies Of The...." in 2001.
