Brother Ali did not just enter the hip hop music scene- he quietly grabbed it by the throat and made the whole world sit up and take notice. At a time when rap music was slipping into a rut of mediocrity and redundancy, Ali stormed in with his exemplary writing skills, varied musical talents and thought-provoking lyrics. He is a storyteller with a bang, one of the few rappers that began as a live performer, battling it out with other rappers live on stage.
Ali began his musical career with less than nothing but his drive and talent soon got him noticed by Rhymesayers entertainment. There Ali was lucky enough to find a group of people that he could work with and grow as a musician with. In 2000, Ali released his first album 'Rites of Passage' which met with huge critical acclaim. Ali captivated listeners with his striking appearance, both onstage and off but it was widely acknowledged that Ali was a more formidable presence during his live performances. This is something he admits himself as he has often claimed to feel restricted when asked to perform in a studio.
Ali went on to do numerous shows, working with musicians such as Mos Def, Living Legends and Souls of Mischief and doing live shows with them as well. Ali also completed an exhausting touring regime, covering sixty-three shows in a matter of seventy-one days with Atmosphere and Murs. He also continued to do live battle rap sessions and was present in the finals of the Scribble Jam MC finals in 2000 and 2001.
Ali's best work till date remains his latest effort, entitled 'Champion EP'. Hailed by many as being a masterpiece of sorts, the album contains deep, thought-provoking lyrics that explore a variety of topics like poverty as well as his own insights into his status in the rap music world. Ali has never been averse to trying new things on his albums and has even contemplated working with bands like the White Stripes, simply because he feels that it would be a coming together of two strong musicians with distinct styles- surely something amazing could come out of that.
