Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson was the driving force behind the Beach Boys, being the primary songwriter, bassist, and singer early on as well as the main producer, composer, and arranger throughout most the group’s existence. Wilson, his brothers Carl and Dennis, his cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine formed the Beach Boys in the early 60’s. Originally the group was called the Pendletones, but unknown to them, the group’s name was changed as the first single, “Surfin’” was released. By the mid-60s, Brian felt he could no longer perform live with the band and write new material, so he replaced himself with Glen Campbell and then Bruce Johnston. The Beach Boys were a huge hit during this time, becoming an instant success selling records and tickets. >> More alt

About Brian Wilson

Wilson’s main contribution to the group was his song writing. Some of Brian’s biggest hits at the time were “Surfin’ USA”, Fun, Fun, Fun”, “I Get Around”, “Help Me Rhoda”, “California Girls”, “Wouldn’t It Be nice”, and “Good Vibrations”. Wilson branched out from the Beach Boys and began writing and producing material for other acts, like Glen Campbell, the Honeys, and Jan and Dean. None of those acts would go on to be as successful as the Beach Boys though, neither in records sales or tickets sales.

It was during this time that the Beach Boys were competing with the Beatles for popularity, and, despite the competition, Wilson and Paul McCartney became friends, admiring each others work. Brian Wilson’s first solo track came during this period as well. The single “Caroline, No” was released by Capitol Records by Wilson despite being on the Beach Boys’ Pet Shop album.

Brian worked on one last album with the Beach Boys, SMiLE, but the project was cancelled before it could be completed. Brian still packaged and released the single “Heroes and Villains” from the failed project. While in the studio in 1968, tragedy struck and took his first child during birth. Wilson was severely shaken by the death, but remained as the primary creative force with the Beach Boys, although in a far more diminished role. As a result the Beach Boys record sales and tickets sales began to steadily fall.

The last commercial failure, the single “Breaking Away”, sent Wilson over the edge. He began to use cocaine and spent all his time in his bedroom sleeping and overeating. His wife reached out to therapist Eugene Landy whose controversial techniques helped Brian return to a functional state.

Wilson’s return increased the group’s sales and he even performed with the group live. Brian’s mental state deteriorated again tough by the 1982. Again the therapist was brought in. His recommendation was that the singer/songwriter be fired from the group and forced to live apart from them by himself on Hawaii where he would follow a strict health regime.

It was reported years later that Brian Wilson actually had schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. The disease caused him to hear voices and the steady diet of antipsychotic drugs had saturated and he developed tardive dyskinesia. After that discovery his medications were decreased to a mild combination of antidepressants. The new treatment left Wilson socially functional and he returned to the studio, now able to record and tour.

Brian’s time under Landy resulted in a break from the Beach Boys and an autobiographical book was even released that has widely been accepted as guided by his influence. Since his break with Landy as a therapist he has recovered and started recording and playing live again. Wilson has released the previously unreleased SMiLE in 2004 as well as several others. Most did not chart and concert tickets did not sell terribly well, but this time has been one of mending-mending his career, his relationship with the Beach Boys, and mending his relationship with daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson.

Brian Wilson is going to return to the stage for a short time this summer. The brilliant musical mind behind the Beach Boys greatest hits is promoting his newest solo effort, That Lucky Old Sun. Wilson and his 10-piece band will start off the tour at the UK English Heritage Picnic Concert on June 28th and end at a three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl from September 12th to 14th.

Brian Wilson tickets will go fast, as everyone will want to hear what new material the music legend has written and produced. The Ticket Specialists will have tickets to all the shows though, complete with an update tour schedule, seating chart, and terrific prices.
