There are few music acts to have embraced fans of the pop-metal era as Bon Jovi has. Combining the loud metal melodic tones of Def Leppard with the working-guy messages as providing by Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi has developed their own version of hard rock; one which successfully appeals to teenagers as much as housewives. Relying mainly on outside songwriters to give their songs, especially their powerful ballads, the appropriate finishing touch, Bon Jovi seemingly came up with a formula which was not only successful for this group, but one which found its way into the mainstream world of hard rock and heavy metal and remained popular for years.

Bon Jovi originally came together in 1983 and was based out of Sayreville, New Jersey. Fronted by lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Jovi, the remainder of the quintet was made up of guitarist Richie Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Alec John Such, and drummer Tico Torres. Remarkably, other than the 1994 departure of Alec John Such who was replaced by Hugh McDonald, Bon Jovi’s lineup has remained unchanged for the past 26 years. After the band’s first two fairly successful albums in 1984 and 1985, Bon Jovi hit it big with the following two records – Slippery When Wet in 1986 and New Jersey in 1988 – launching the group to global superstar status.
After touring non-stop for what seemed like forever, Bon Jovi took a break in 1990 after their New Jersey Tour, and it was during this time that Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora each successfully released solo albums. It was in 1992 that the band got back together to release their album Keep the Faith, and Bon Jovi has continued to come out with successful releases continually ever since – their latest album, The Circle, was released on November 2, 2009.
During their long and successful career, Bon Jovi has touched many fans; having released ten studio albums, two compilation albums, and one live album, while selling over 120 million albums worldwide. In person, Bon Jovi has also performed in 2,600 concerts, in front of more than 34 million fans, and in over 50 countries! In 2004 Bon Jovi was ranked number 14 in Q magazine's 50 Greatest Bands of All Time, and honored with the Award of Merit at the American Music Awards. In 2006, the band was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, and most recently, in 2009, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as songwriters and collaborators.
