About Bob Dylan

It was not until Bob Dylan enrolled in college at the University of Minnesota that he was exposed to folk music. He found a particular liking for Woody Guthrie. Dylan began playing at a local coffee shop and on the Dintytown folk music circuit not exactly selling tickets, but gaining acceptance from the folk music community that ran strong in Minneapolis.

In January 1961, Bob Dylan took to New York City to try and see his ailing music idol, Woody Guthrie. Instead he ended up meeting a close friend of Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Dylan started playing around Greenwich Village making a name for himself. The explosion of the “new folk movement” in 1963, the same year he officially changed his name to Robert Dylan (His first choice, Robert Allen, was already taken so he simply switched out the last name after reading poetry by Dylan Thomas.).

In fact until the movement broke out, Columbia Records was considering releasing him from the label. Bob Dylan’s albums caught on as he was the dominant figure out of the Greenwich Village folk community. His albums would go on to sell certified gold or platinum and tickets to his concerts would sell out no matter where they were scheduled along the tour.

By the mid-60s Bob Dylan had been heavily influenced by the British invasion on the radio. Dylan began to use the electric guitar at his concerts and eventually in his albums, to the ire of his folk friends. They felt betrayed, but Bob was simply trying to incorporate music he enjoyed into his music repertoire. In the end, Dylan had five platinum certified albums in the decade, by far his greatest era of commercial success, as his top selling albums came with heavy sales of tickets and pressure to perform.

The pressure forced Bob Dylan into reclusion following a motorcycle accident after a tour of Europe in the late ‘60s. It was hid idol, Woody Guthrie’s, death tat brought him out of seclusion and on to the stage for his first performance in 20 months on January 20, 1968. The ‘70s were a very tumultuous decade for Bob Dylan. His albums were often accused of being of great varying quality. As a result, his record sales plummeted, but eventually his return to touring in 1973 brought out his old favorites and sold many, many tickets.

Dylan appeared with many huge acts in the remainder of the decade, including The Band, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash. He spent much of the ‘80s experimenting. He became a born again Christian and went through a gospel phase, he tried a little rap, and he joined a star studded lineup with Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and George Harrison as the Traveling Wilburys. The group sold countless albums and their concerts were incredibly popular selling out tickets to almost every show. Bob Dylan has been one of the most influential musicians and artists in the last few decades. He was countless awards and received many honors, placing him at the forefront of the list of the most influential people in the 20th century.
