Bo Burnham began singing at Guy, a college dive bar. The bassist used to listen to radio constantly as a child. The drummer first found his love of music by listening to his dad's collection of records. Bo Burnham’s members were friends in middle school. The Beatles heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Bo Burnham talked to a local music director from B96.9 and got their single on air. The girlfriend of a record executive heard the song and soon after Bo Burnham was signed. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather perform in the smaller clubs in which they began.
Bo Burnham accepted that they were real working musicians in 1987, as soon as Jennifer Wilmouth started the group’s first fan club. Starting out in Chicago with a few dozen members, the club grew fast, eclipsing a couple thousand across the country in under a year.
