Howard and David Bellamy spent their early lives in Florida. Their father, Homer Bellamy, was quite used to play traditional country music in the house and used to perform with a Western band on the weekends. The brothers were also attracted towards the calypso music of Caribbean apart from the music at home. However not anything proved to be as attracting as rock and roll. They used to listen to Beatles, everly brothers etc. In their late teens they were fascinated to country music listening to music of Merle Haggard and George Jones.
Both Howard and David learnt to play a variety of instruments as children. They never had any formal training, but in the late '60s, they performed in a number of bands, together and independently. In 1968, they moved to Atlanta and formed Jericho. Performing in a large number of bands proved helpful for them as they used to cater to different audience and developed their music as a result.
In a short period of time their toil paid off and they met Jim Stafford, he in 1973 directed and released “Spiders and Snakes”. Nobody expected that the retelling of David’s youth farm experiences would sell over three million copies. The huge success of “Snakes and Spiders” gave the duo enough financial resources for them to go to Los Angeles and develop on their music.
In 1975, they signed with Warner Brothers, releasing their initial single, David's "Nothin’ Heavy." Unfortunately this song flopped. Their friend Dennis St. John, a drummer, recommended that the duo record a song composed by Larry E. Williams, one of the famous roadies of Diamond's. After some persuasion, the Bellamy Brothers recorded and released the song, "Let Your Love Flow." The song broke all records for them, they topped the charts and climbed into the Top 30, they were a major hit in Britain, West Germany, and Scandinavia as well.
Hastily the duo released another album named after the single “Nothing Heavy” and it was as successful as the single. Now Instead of only concentrating on home the duo started touring Europe which brought them great money. Their next album, 1977's “Plain and Fancy”, was a key success in Sweden and Norway, but didn't make much of an impact in the US.
In The years to come the brothers moved back to America and changed their style. This change in style paid off and they re-entered Top 20 of the country chart. The Bellamy Brothers' breakthrough happened again in 1979; with "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It against Me." They were nominated for Grammy awards for best duo or group. CMA crowned them the most promising group of the year. Later they kept on releasing new songs and most of them were hits.
The duo released “Angels & Outlaws Vol. 1”, singing their well-known songs along with other country artists, in 2005. They are performing some LIVE shows nowadays which you probably will not like to miss so get your tickets and enjoy their Music.
