In her illustrious career Bebe Neuwirth has portrayed a wide variety of roles and enjoyed success at all levels. She was also greatly appreciated for her deadpan portrayal of the eccentric, brittle, astringent yet very attractive Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane on NBC's very successful and long-running sitcom, "Cheers". She also has appeared in a handful of films, many of which have exploited her peculiar, histrionic talents. She played the role of a guidance counselor in "Say Anything" (1989) with aplomb and then had supporting roles in memorable "Green Card" (1990) where she essayed the role of Andie MacDowell's best friend. In the breathtaking effective thriller "Malice" (1993), Neuwirth was the sharp detective trailing the maverick Alec Baldwin while in the famous "Jumanji" (1995), she was seen as the aunt of the children who begin playing a quirkily mysterious board game. In addition she had perhaps one of her best role to date in a distinct and definitive change of pace as an ultra sexy yuppie in "The Associate" (1996).
Bebe Neuwirth's was born to parents who were a mathematician and an artist of repute, which pretty much sums up her distinctive appeal. There is a palpable indication of a fiercely analytical approach to her method acting. After finishing her schooling at Juilliard with good grades, she got her chance at touring in "A Chorus Line", essaying various roles including the role of Sheila for which she was instantly recognized and the very vulnerable portrayal Cassie, and on different Broadway productions such as the popular "Little Me" and Bob Fosse's "Dancing'" which was staged in 1982.
The best part about Neuwirth is that she has always been happiest and has most effectively utilized her talents onstage in live shows. Her wonderful combined skills as actor, dancer and singer was at its full splendor as seen in the musical "Showing Off", as the mesmerizing Lola in the 1994 revival of "Damn Yankees". Her superb portrayal of celebrity murderess Velma Kelly was truly appreciated and it earned her rave reviews and she even picked up a second Tony Award besides critical acclaim for her sterling efforts.
