Balkan Beat Box is the folk and pop music, which Kaplan and Tamir Muskat grew up with in Israel. They seem to have enwrapped so much of this music, in the liquescent pot of New York City and elsewhere, that its difficult to really sum them up. Kaplan says. "Some people describe it as Balkan-inspired electronic urban folk, with hip-hop beats." Their group includes singers, performers and influences from North Africa and the Middle East to Greece and the lower Balkan countries. Balkan Beat Box is exorbitant with an acute research into their own non-Western roots as well as other cultures. They perform with a core of 6 musicians, collaborating with artists from Spain, Israel, Bulgaria, Morocco, and Turkey who have their own styles from around the world. Every event keeps the audience enthralled. BBB's musical mixing continues as they play around with dub and electronics, adjacent with ancient Moroccan and Mediterranean melodies. The band's shows are expansive, quite exhaustive, with a core of six to 10 musicians. But the crowds enjoy the music, whether in Chicago, Geneva or Jerusalem. This is all it takes to foster a little cross-border brotherhood. So when they do things like bringing a Palestinian hip-hop group onstage in Jerusalem, they do not feel its provocatiing the people. Balkan Beat Box performs an elysian madness that transverses multi-cultural music with non-stop dance party. Its full horns, dj beats, rhythmic basslines and percussion come together for a dreamlike atmosphre that's part Gypsy caravan, part performance-art collective. Balkan Beat Box brings together folk traditions with electronic beats, video projections, and a rotating cast of vocalists including the Victoria Hannah, Hassan Ben Jaffar, Tomer Yosef, Buglarian Chicks, and Jeremiah Lockwood. It is also influenced by Boban Markovic, Rachid Taha, Fanfare Ciocarlia as well as Manu Chao and Charlie Parker.
