The members of Back of The Moon grew up together. The band used to sell their CDs out of their car in the school parking lot. Back of The Moon began playing at the college dive bar Overview. The guitarist was heavily influenced by his aunt's love for music.

Back of The Moon accepted that they were truly working musicians as soon as Carol Gibson started a fan club for the band in 1975. The fan club started out small with just a handful of members, generally localized to the area around Champaign, but the creation the group’s website by Michelle Parquette, along with the first real national marketing campaign, saw the membership to grow into the thousands.
