About The Bacilos
The band was formed sometime in the nineties when three students at the University of Miami came together to make some original Latino music. The line up originally just consisted of the duo of Jorge Villamizar and Jose Javier Freire who had already made a name for themselves on the local club scene. They later teamed up with another student André Lopes and named themselves Bacilos, named after a home remedy Villamizar's grandmother used to keep.
The trio clicked instantly with each other and with their audiences. Their initial sound was more rock and punk based with only a smattering of Latino influence. As the group matured, their sound became more organic and they increasingly began to turn to their traditional musical roots for inspiration. The initial road was rocky for the group- a defunct record deal left them looped in red tape for a number of years. To make matters worse, the group was separated for a while when Villamizar's work visa ran out and he had to leave Miami.
With the help of family and friends, the band was reunited in 1999 and managed to put out their first album Madera, which they made only 1000 copies of. One of these copies landed in the hands of a recording executive and soon the band hand landed a contract with Warner Music Latina. Madera was released again under the name Bacilos and went on to win two Latin Grammy nominations. This was followed by the album Caraluna which zoomed to the top of the Latin music charts and snagged the band three Grammys for best Latin Pop album, best tropical song and best pop vocal album by a duo or group.
The group followed their Grammy success with an electrifying tour called Tour Caraluna 2003 which took them across Europe, Latin America and the US. Their live performances were met with widespread critical acclaim and a thundering fan base that followed wherever they went. In 2004, the album Sin Vergüenza was released to great commercial and critical success. The band was awarded another Grammy nomination for their efforts on the album.
