The orchestra was founded in 1945 when it played its first concert under the moniker of the Atlanta Youth Symphony. In 1947, the name was changed to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and it soon began to garner attention nationally and worldwide, even snagging a few prime soloists to perform with. In 1968 the orchestra came under new direction and was turned into a full time vocation. In order to add more depth to their performances, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus was formed and added in 1970. 1976 saw the ASO make their prestigious Carnegie Hall debut. In 1978 the ASO had the singular distinction of being the first American symphony to make a commercial digital recording.
The ASO grew from strength to strength scoring more enviable distinctions along the way. The orchestra was chosen to play at the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics and went on to tour Europe. On the recording front, the ASO has released a number of albums which have resulted in the remarkable number of Grammys that the ASO has won over the years. ASO's other achievements include an Audio Excellence Award and awards from Gramophone and Ovation magazines.
The ASO regularly host the annual King Celebration concerts in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and has done much in the arena of furthering the opportunities available on the orchestral circuit for young African Americans and Latino students. The orchestra is also a regular participant at the National Black Arts Festival since its inception.
