"The Asylum Street Spankers," hail from Austin, Texas. The band is unique in itself with their tremendous sound and mind-blowing beats. The band is led by vocalist Christina Marrs and vocalist/washboard player/poet Wammo. The band has been consistently garnering a cult following with their sizzling brand of early jazz and acoustic blues since their arrival on the main musical scene. While much of their superb material is blues taken from the 1920s and '30s, the group also performs original songs in many live shows.

They are unique in their presentation also as their live show are performed without microphones and amplifiers, usually including the tunes from Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith and other traditional, standard blues tunes. In addition to Marrs and Wammo, members of the band have included guitarist Jeff Ross, guitarist Colonel Josh, drummer Jimmie Dean, banjo and mandolin player Pops Bayless, kazoo player Mysterious John and Guy Forsyth, guitarist and saw player Oliver, and bassist Kevin Smith.
This eight-member musical powerhouse was originated in the early '90s at a hotel outside of Austin. After some initial gigs and an all-night acoustic tune swap, the band members realized that they were on to something and then all the members decided to get back to basics and heartily started playing acoustic music. The group began attracting growing crowds after playing at the Electric Lounge, which is a bar in Austin, and from that great beginning they took the next step and enthusiastically recorded their maiden album for a local label, "Watermelon Records."
While many of the progressions and melodies on Spanks for Memories are old. Most of the band's lyrics are straight out of contemporary America. Soothing tracks like "Lee Harvey," "Funny Cigarette," "Trade Winds," and "Hometown Boy" are very funny and proved entertaining to most audiences. The band showcased their charisma and charm in a live setting in a superb show in 1996 and also earned some rave reviews.
This was followed by their next release "Rotten Cocksucker's Ball," which became an instant hit. Next year, the band issued "Spanker Madness," which took their fans by surprise with a heavy cast of guest musicians and their hootenanny-style structure. Every track of the band revolved around the merits of marijuana. In 2002, the band released "My Favorite Recorde" under band’s own Spank-A-Lot Records.
